Blame your brain, your context and your tribe (The reason why development actions fail)
The Prefrontal Cortex, that place in our brain where rational decisions take place.
In any personal development action, call it a conference, training, coaching or therapy session, a class or taking advice from a colleague; your Prefrontal Cortex is listening, eager to incorporate that piece of wisdom that will make your life easier. But why is it that just one week after you got that powerful insight you barely remember it, and you are back to your old behaviors? There is only one culprit to blame: The Amygdala.
Responsible for regulating emotions, such as fear and anger, the Amygdala is way faster than the Prefrontal Cortex, and although most of the times it means to protect us, in certain circumstances like the lack of proper sleep, hangover or stress, it induces us to make irrational decisions.
This means that you need to create the best conditions for your Prefrontal Cortex to take over the Amygdala to incorporate those wonderful learnings you gain daily.

How can you do that?
Lead a healthier life: sleep 8 hours, workout frequently and eat healthy foods. This is the way your Prefrontal Cortex gets the DOSE (Dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins) needed to counterbalance the Amygdala and boost your development.
Tweak your context: modify your home and working environment, eliminate anything that can distract you from your goal. For example, do you want to be healthier? Avoid stuffing your fridge with un-healthy stuff (keep the un-healthy out of your line-of-sight). Do you want to be more efficient? Organize your desk, so that you keep anything you need handy.
And never forget…
Choose your tribe: identify people you know that are in a similar development journey than yours, maybe those who want to be healthier, more efficient or just happier. Try hanging with them more often. You’ll be surprised with the results.
